FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

THE 5TH AFRICAN CONFERENCE ON RESEARCH REACTOR UTILIZATION

" THE ROLE OF RESEARCH REACTORS IN NUTRITION ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH RELATED RESEARCH".

ORGANIZED BY THE

EGYPTIAN ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY (EAEA)

in cooperation with

the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA)

Under the

AFRA project, “Nutritional and Health Related Studies Using Research Reactors” (RAF/4/020)

Cairo, Egypt, (2-3) Dec. 2007

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) in co-operation with the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) has the pleasure of announcing the 5th African Conference on Research Reactor(RR) Utilization under the theme "The Role of Research Reactors in Nutritional, environment and Health Related Research” . The conference will be held at the premises of EAEA in Cairo, Egypt during December 2-3, 2007 in Cairo, Egypt.

Background

This conference on research reactor utilization is the fifth in a series of conferences as part of the AFRA-supported activities in the field. The utilization of RRs in Africa for research, training and education in diverse fields such as nuclear science and technology, physics, chemistry, geology, soil, agriculture, food life sciences, mineral and material development as well as industrial applications such as NAA and isotope production needs to be encouraged. The AFRA activities in the field of research reactor utilization and safety seek to increase utilization levels at RRs in Africa by providing training, expertise, hands-on practical experience and coordinated joint projects with emphasis on co-operation between the African countries (TCDC). The effort is expected to optimize the utilization of this important regional infrastructure and expertise to enhance regional co-operation and promote national, regional self-reliance and sustainability of peaceful utilization of RRs.

OBJECTIVES

Research Reactors have an important role in diverse applications with widespread benefits for large scale radioisotope (RI) production, neutron beam research and industrial applications, like, neutron irradiation for transmutation doping of silicon and. material testing. They can be used to determine essential and toxic elements in food stuffs, medicinal plants and environmental pollution indicators, through multi-element analysis and elemental analysis of coastal bio-monitors e.g. Seaweeds, shellfish for health-related pollutants. These additional applications will enhance the scope of use of available research reactors and yield income from the services to be rendered to national end-users. RRs, thus, have an important role in the socioeconomic development of a country and the region.

The principal objective of the conference is to share knowledge in the field of RRs in general and their applications of RRs in Nutritional, Environmental and health related research in particular for socio-economic development in the African Region.

Participants are cordially invited to present the scientific papers and attend the conference to exchange information to realize the tenets of the defined objectives.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

Papers are invited on the following topics:

·  Toxic elements in foodstuffs and medicinal plants.

·  Neutron Activation Analysis and applications in food, health, medicine and environment.

·   Reactor analysis for reactor utilization.

·   Industrial Irradiation.

·   Neutron Beam Research.

·   Radioisotope production and applications

·   Education and training.
